Ringstrasse – Vienna
The 4.5 kilometer long Ringstrasse or Ringstraße, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, surrounds he inner city of Vienna, the historic downtown area, ending at the Danube bank. It was built to replace the city wall, as ordered by Franz Joseph I, to facilitate traffic and to be a showcase for imperial Habsburg grandeur. Buildings along the ring include he Opera House, the Parliament and Votivkirche, a uniquely beautiful church building.
