Mariahilfer Straße is one of the most famous shopping streets in Vienna, the inner part being located in between Westbahnhof and Museumsplatz, offering a wide variety of shops, restaurants and places of entertainment. This part of the Austrian capital was an elegant neighbourhood as early as in the 17th century, and received its present name in 1862. Franz Joseph emperor usually took this route in between Hofburg and the Schonbrunn Palace. In the winter, during the Christmas season, the inner part of the street is closed before traffic on Saturdays, making it more convenient for shoppers to stroll between the shops.
