Gumpendorfer Straße U6 metro station - Vienna

Line U6 of the Vienna Metro transports passangers between Floridsdorf and Siebenhirten, from northeast to southwest, and then to south, in the western side of the capital. The line runs above ground on an elevated track most of the time, except for a few tunnels. Construction work first started in 1894, the first section was opened in 1898 as Stadtbahn. The line was closed in 1918, and re-opened as a G, and then as a GD line in 1926. In 1989, it was closed again, turned into a metro line, and opened as U6 in the same year with the first stops. Additions followed, and the the rest of today’s line – the total of 10.6 miles – was finished in 1996. Travel time is 36 minutes, and there are 22 stations in between: Neue Donau, Handelskai, Dresdener Straße, Jägerstraße, Spittelau, Nußdorfer Straße, Währinger Straße, Michelbeuern – AKH, Alser Straße, Josefstädter Straße, Thaliastraße, Burggasse, Westbahnhof, Gumpendorfer Straße, Längenfeldgasse, Niederhofstraße, Philadelphiabrücke, Tscherttegasse, Am Schöpfwerk, Alterlaa, Erlaaer Straße, Perfektastraße.
Gumpendorfer Straße is the fourteeenth stop of the Viennese U6 metro line from the northern end, the brown line in the western part of downtown. The station was opened in 1898, the name of the street refers to a former village – on the pond, which is now part of the capital’s 6th district.
