Burgtheater - the Castle Theatre, the Austrian National Theatre is one of the most prominent stages of Europe, located in the 1st district of Vienna. The 16th century building was originally a hall for balls, in the lower backyard of Hofburg, and was converted into a theatre in the 18th century, during the reign of Maria Theresa. The name reflects its location: the theatre by the castle-fort. The theatre moved into a new building at the end of the 19th century, its present building, where allegorical figures and small statues of famous poets ornament the facade. The Burgtheater was the theatre of the court and the gentry. The left wing includes the Vestibül studio stage. The Akademiathater belongs to the same company, and additional facilities include the Kasino on Schwarzenbergplatz, where modern pieces appear on the stage, and the Arsenal, a former military base, converted into a rehearsal stage.
The building can be visited on tours as well. Located in between Schottentor, Volkstheater, Rathaus and Herrengasse, it is easy to reach by metro, and tram line 1 has a nearby stop.  A Burgtheater – Vienna - nearest hotels
